Did They Notice?

Critics review the show, but how often do they mention the design?

Did They Notice? is The Tech Table's new review tracker for the 2026–2027 season. For every Broadway and Off Broadway opening, we read the reviews from more than 90 critics at 26 publications, including The New York Times, Variety and Vulture, and pull every line written about the scenery, costumes, lighting, sound, projections, wigs and hair, and illusions.

Each quote is exact, credited to the designer, and linked to the original review. Look up a show, a designer, a discipline, a publication, a critic or a venue to see who is getting noticed, which outlets pay attention to design, and what was said about your own work. Nearly 100 productions are in so far, with more added as shows open.

Reviews are up for 860, The Imaginary Invalid, Other Desert Cities, The curious Case of Benjamin Button, Copperfield! and many others!

Ghost Light News

Broadway League Report Average Broadway production cost in 2024-25 season was $9.5Million per show

Those figures come from the Broadway League‘s latest annual report Broadway’s Economic Contribution to New York City 2024-2025, published October 21, 2026. The report puts the average Broadway production cost at $9.5 million per show for 2024–25, up from $7.7 million in 2018–19 (inflation-adjusted). That average covers commercial and not-for-profit shows together. The most expensive commercial productions topped $30 million.

By show type (44 new productions, $418M total):

  • Musicals: $284.8M across 21 shows, about $13.6M each

  • Plays: $131.3M across 22 shows, about $6.0M each

  • Specials: $1.9M (1 show)

Breakdown by category

The report gives a sample percentage split for a typical musical and play. Applying those percentages to the averages above gives approximate dollar figures:

Caveats for using these numbers:

  • The percentages are a "sample breakdown," not a computed average across all 44 shows. The dollar columns are my estimates, not figures from the report.

  • The costs count only money actually spent, and only spending that benefits NYC. A show's capitalization, which includes reserves and bonds, will be higher.

  • Labor includes designer fees and load-in costs, so some design-related spending sits in the salaries line rather than in "Physical.".
